Yahoo Changes Overture Name, Launches Developer Network
A busy day for Yahoo. Not only did co-founder Jerry Yang provide the keynote "chat" at the SES show in NYC, but the search engine also made two major announcements today.

First, Yahoo is finally absorbing Overture fully into the family and changing the division's name to "Yahoo Search Marketing Solutions". The move is seen as a crucial step for Yahoo, as they seek to reach out to search marketers with services and solutions that will help the company increase its marketing reach.

The second part of their announcement sees the launch of the Yahoo Search Developer Network. According to CNet, the network will allow software developers to create new applications (with the aid of application programming interfaces, or APIs) on top of Yahoo search, including images, video, news and local search. The newly formed network will also absorb the APIs from Overture.

"Search is not just a service; it's becoming a piece of the infrastructure of the Internet, its file system," Eckart Walther, director of product management for Yahoo Search, said in an interview. "We're making it much easier for third parties to develop value-added services for search."

The search engine battle is heating up!
