Google Needs Instant Messaging to Stay Competitive?
Bambi Francisco thinks Google may need to move into instant messaging in order to engage users for longer periods.

She points out that time spent on Gmail accounted for 45% of time spent on all of Google, and more than time spent on actual searches.

Users spent 9 times longer on Yahoo than Google. 22% of time spent on Yahoo was spent in instant messaging.

Google does not have an IM service. But if Yahoo's IM performance is any indicator, Google might be able to attract new users and keep them on its service for longer stretches of time, both of significant interest to advertisers.
