Search marketing in the new media era.

MySpace marketing with PosterFoo.com
In my recent post about the MySpace X-Space page, I received a simple question from Quadszilla over at SEOBlackHat.com, "What level of success are you having with MySpace marketing?"

The answer is simple. We haven't tried yet but I am working with Garrett and some of the other marketing geniuses here at MSI on expanding our offering into emerging markets like MySpace as a channel for brand participation.

I then started thinking about what would it take to find success on MySpace. What would success look like?

It seems plain to me that not everyone will successfully be able to market on MySpace. For instance, a mattress shop or a law firm would not benefit greatly by marketing there because, IMHO, MySpace is all about friends, special interests, movies and music. A hip poster shop on the other hand could make a killing.

Let's say we had a poster shop, we will call it PosterFoo.com. PosterFoo.com could do very well with their music, movie and pin-up posters in the MySpace channel.

There are a number of things that could be done to incentivize and engage their market in addition to having a cool profile.

For one, poster based skins could be a huge boon. They could have posters available as skins and include a graphic in the top corner of the page saying, "page skin by PosterFoo.com Click Here to buy this poster."

Then they could offer 15% discounts for anyone who adds them as a friend or do timely free poster offers for some hit movie coming out soon like maybe... X-Men. They could also follow up with subsequent offers in MySpace Bulletins.

Perhaps they could even go as far as allowing graphics upload to their site so indie bands can sell custom posters to their fans.

By doing all of this PosterFoo.com not only generates sales but also expands their brand awareness so that next time PosterFoo.com is in the #3 spot for "X-men 3 movie poster" under allPosters.com they might be more likely to get the click and the subsequent conversion.

Let me know if you have any ideas of your own for PosterFoo.com in how they might be able to use MySpace to engage their market and encourage participation.

Actually, if you would like to submit a client situation or personal online business to a more real world MySpace opportunity analysis, email me and I will post it here for everyone's benefit.

Quadszilla, I look forward to hearing from you again. We turned the trackbacks on just for you ;)

PS. The X-Space profile is up to 193,932 friends.
