NewsCorp, Fox and MySpace didn't just hit a home run with X-Space, it's a grand slam
So I get home from work today, take care of the nightly routine with my son and sit down to check out a few things online. One of those things happens to be checking up on my MySpace profile. As soon as I get to the MySpace homepage my jaw lands on my laptop keyboard.

Holy Crap! MySpace has been completely taken over by X-Men.



So you know how I was impressed with the synergies between Fox and MySpace before. It was cool that there were lots of new features available only to the X-Space profile and I was proud of NewsCorp for understanding their marketplace. Well now that home run is a grand slam and they have just taken this campaign whole orders of magnitude above anything I had previously contemplated.

I also noticed that they added a link from the profile to what looks like a Google Maps, MySpace, X-Space friends mash-up. It's pretty cool. In addition, anyone who requests to be a friend of the X-men profile is accepted immediately. Is there anything they didn't think of?

Previously, I was looking X-Space profile to extract methods to create meaningful interaction between companies and their markets in MySpace with the PosterFoo.com example. At that point, X-Space was comparatively still kind of grass roots. Now that the trump card has been pulled and the true muscle of NewsCorp has been flexed, all I can do is sit here in awe of the awesome power of this display of online mass media exposure.

All that’s left now it to watch as the number of friends the X-Space profile has multiplies exponentially. I wouldn't be surprised if that number tops 4-5 million before the movie launches next week and it becomes the most popular profile on MySpace to date.

Yesterday, when published the first post about midday, the # was 135,570. Today at 12:30 when I posted the follow up it had grown by about 60,000 to 193,932. When I started this post at 7:00 this evening it was at 275,857 and now an hour later it is at 291,279.

I have a sneaking suspicion that for a long time to come this will be looked at the gold standard on how to market with MySpace. Take notes kids, there will be a quiz after class.

Let me know if you notice anything else about this X-Men/MySpace campaign in the comments of this post. Who knows, maybe they will even do some TV ads during the Idol results show tonight sending people to MySpace like Pontiac did with Google a few months back. I wouldn't put anything past NewsCorp at this point.

Update (10:00PM 5-17-06)
So, while Idol had plenty of X-Men tie-ins and commercials, I didn't see anything about MySpace.
