Search marketing in the new media era.

X-Men 3 Breaks Box Office Records: Did MySpace Efforts Help?
X-Men the last stand broke some crazy records over memorial day weekend.

I wonder if the X-Space MySpace profile with 2.5 million friends helped out in any way.

That’s right boys and girls, the X-Men MySpace profile is up to 2,550,325 friends.

RottenTomatoes.com describes the X-Men record setting as "Blasting past expectations, the third X-Men film dominated the scene grossing an estimated $120.1M over the long weekend from an ultrawide 3,690 venues. The Fox sequel averaged a jaw-dropping $32,554 over four days and set a new record for Memorial Day weekend beating two previous giants." The giants were Shrek 2 and The Lost World.

They also mention that "During the Friday-to-Sunday portion of the holiday weekend, the new X-Men pic grossed a stunning $103.1M making it the fourth largest bow in history after three other May smashes - Spider-Man ($114.8M in 2002), Star Wars Episode III ($108.4M in 2005), and Shrek 2 ($108M in 2004)."

The question is, with reviews like this how did they pull it off?

So if MySpace did indeed play a role in this, what kind of role was it and how can we measure it? How do we know whether or not the MySpace campaign was the clincher in this success and the key differentiating factor that put it over the edge?

I'm sorry I am coming with only speculation and ideas here but you just can't ignore that these 2.5 million people didn't play a huge role.

I wonder how this will affect DVD sales if they offer all of their MySpace friends a special deal on it or the chance to purchase early. Remember, now that thes 2.5M fans are friends of the profile, Fox can send bulletins to all of them.

It's essentially a 2.5 million user opt in email list. Wow!

Let me know what you think. Leave a comment or email me.
